Eight of the world’s richest men have more money than the poorest half of the world combined, the charity Oxfam announced today. Between them, the eight multi-billionaires have $426 billion, whereas the 3.6 billion poorest people on the planet have just $409 billion. The report into the inequality of wealth says that the gap between the rich and poor is getting bigger. In 2010, 388 wealthy people had the same amount of money as 50% of the world’s poorest. Now that figure is reduced to just eight. Six of the men are American and four are involved in computing or technology, including Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft ($75 billion), Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of Facebook ($44.6 billion) and Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon ($45.2 billion). Mark Zuckerberg had previously announced that he intends to give away 99% of his shares in Facebook (worth around $45 billion) to charitable causes in his lifetime.
