People often say, "Lightning never strikes twice". That is supposed to reassure us, right? WRONG! It's not true at all. Lightning strikes the Earth about 50 times a second and lightning can strike twice or even many times in the same place. The Empire State Building in New York, for example, gets hit about 25 times a year. And one national park employee in the United States was struck by lightning seven times in his lifetime! In fact, in the US, more people are killed by lightning than tornadoes and hurricanes put together.
